Email Lists

What is an Email List?

An email list is a group of addresses which can all be reached using a single email address. Mailing lists are like a group discussion, but more specific in nature than a newsgroup. They are administered by an email list server program residing on the CSTL server.

Email messages are sent to the server which, in turn, sends the messages to all subscribers on the list. To help automate the administration of the list, mailing list servers accept control messages from mailing list subscribers to subscribe, unsubscribe, and perform other mailing list functions. Mailing list servers usually run 24 hours a day to keep the flow of mail to the list constant.

How does it work?

Registered users can write an email addressed to the list (the list itself has an email address) and the program will take care of the message distribution.  Any reply to the message will also be distributed to the group, so everyone follows the discussion, being able to post comments or ideas at any time.
