Obtain an account on the CSTL servers

A server is a computer application designed to make files and other computer resources shared over the network.  Servers usually run in machines especially built to stay on 24/7 for a very long period of time.  The CSTL currently has 9 Web servers running on three such machines to serve instructional content to faculty and students.  As a faculty member at Southeast, you are entitled to have disk space available for your instructional materials on one of the CSTL servers.

Our first step will be getting an account set up so you can start adding your files to the server.  Please fill in the form in the Account Request page.  You will receive an answer from the CSTL support people shortly by email.  This email will give you details about your newly created web account.  The three essential pieces of information you'll need are your username, your password and your web address

Your username and password will be the same as your Southeast Key, which you will need to set up with Computer Services prior to setting up an account with the CSTL.   Please make sure you remember what your password is, and avoid writing it down in places where someone can see it.  We at the CSTL strive to make your web as secure as it gets, but we cannot guarantee security if someone else has your password.

Your web address is what you will give your students to allow them to visit your web page.  It looks like this:  http://cstl.semo.edu/username.  Once a user types the address in the browser's address box, the browser will retrieve information from the server in order to display the pages to the user.  Write your address down if you find it hard to remember.  Chances are you will get used to it as you access the server files constantly.

Install FrontPage on your computer

After you submitted your request for an account on one of the CSTL servers, you need to make sure that you have an HTML editor installed on your computer.  Since the university has a site license for Microsoft Office products, we will use FrontPage as our editor of choice.

First, find out if you have a version of FrontPage installed on your computer.  Go to Start | Program Files and look for FrontPage on the list of installed programs.  If you don't see it on the list, then it might have to be installed.  You can request that Computer Services install it for you, or you can purchase a FrontPage CD at Southeast Bookstore for the price of the media only (the license is paid for by the university).

Once you have FrontPage installed, then you will be ready to go to Step 2.
