Use FrontPage to update and maintain a Web Site

FrontPage is one of the most commonly used programs to update and maintain the content of a website. There are a few very common tasks that help facilitate this process and will be listed below. These tasks are: Logging into the FrontPage Web, Creating a hyperlink, Inserting an image, Creating a table, and Uploading files into a web.

Create a hyperlink

Text hyperlink:

  1. Left click to one side of the text you wish to turn into a hyperlink.
        --This action places the cursor near the area in which we are going to work with.
  2. Now highlight the text area; this can be accomplished by following these steps:
    1. Place the mouse pointer again to one side of the text to be highlighted
    2. Push down continuously on the left mouse button (i.e. don't let up on it)
    3. Move the mouse across the screen until the entire text area is highlighted. Typically this means that a black, blue, or purple area surrounds the text.
    4. Once all of the text is highlighted, lift up on the mouse button
  3. In one of the toolbars look for an icon that looks like the Earth with a linked chain across it. Click on this icon.
  4. In the windows that appears, click in the field beside 'Hyperlink'
  5. Fill in the hyperlink information in the field to the right of 'Hyperlink:'
        Two ways to accomplish this:
    1. if it is a file within your web, double-click on the file. You will see it in the large file section in the upper middle section of this screen (some browsing around in the file area may be required).
    2. if it isn't local or you know the URL, type in the URL
  6. Click on 'Ok'
  7. Click to one side to clear out the highlighted area. Now, that area should be blue and underlined.

Image hyperlink:

  1. Click on the image
  2. In one of the toolbars look for an icon that looks like the Earth with a linked chain across it. Click on this icon.
  3. Click in the field beside 'Hyperlink'
  4. Fill in the hyperlink information in the field to the right of 'Hyperlink:'
    Two ways to accomplish this:
    1. if it is a file within your web, double-click on the file. You will see it in the large file section in the upper middle section of this screen (some browsing around in the file area may be required).
    2. if it isn't local or you know the URL, type in the URL
  5. Click on 'Ok'
  6. Now your image should have a bright blue border around it (the color of the border will be different if you have specified a different hyperlink color than blue).
  7. To eliminate the border:
    1. Right-click on the image
    2. Choose 'Properties' from the pop-up menu.
    3. Click on the 'Appearance' tab at the top of the screen.
    4. Type in '0' (zero) in the field beside 'Border'
    5. Click on 'Ok'

Insert an Image

  1. Upload the image files to your FrontPage Web (if you are uncertain on this procedure, please see the Upload/Import File HOW TO.
  2. Click on the spot in the document where you wish to place the image
  3. Click on 'Insert' in the menu
  4. Click on the 'Image' item in that menu
  5. Now you should be looking at a new window. In the middle of the screen, there is an area that you could use to browse to your image directory. Please do so now.
  6. Click on the image you wish to insert.
  7. Hit the 'Ok' button that is onscreen or touch the 'Enter' key on your keyboard.
  8. Your webpage should now have the image inserted.

Create a table

  1. Click on the place where the table is needed.
  2. Go to the 'Table' menu.
  3. Place your cursor over the 'Insert' option.
  4. Out of the sub menu, choose 'Table'.
  5. Specify the rows and columns.
    Tip: To make the table invisible (basically just using said table for page layout issues) make sure to set the borders option to '0'.
  6. Click on the 'OK' button.

Upload files into FrontPage

  1. Go into the folder in the web
  2. Go to the 'File' menu
  3. Choose 'Import'
  4. Click on the 'Add File' button
  5. Browse to the file you wish to upload
  6. Click on the file you wish to upload
  7. Choose 'Open'
  8. Repeat Steps 4 through 7 until all your files are listed in the box to the left.
  9. Choose 'Ok'
