Streaming Audio and Video

Faculty at Southeast can put audio, video, and presentations online using the RealMedia and Windows Media formats.  The CSTL provides a streaming media server and plenty of disk space to store your multimedia files for streaming to computers running Windows Media Player (for Windows Media content) or RealPlayer / RealOne Player (for RealMedia content; we are not responsible for the annoyance caused by the excessive number of ads and popups in that site).

Streaming files are an efficient way to deliver audio and video content to your students at their convenience and without worrying about huge file sizes to be downloaded (files start playing quickly and allow users to easily select parts of the movie or audio track to be played).

Creating Windows Media Files

Microsoft provides the Windows Media Encoder for free from their web site.  Windows Media has the same quality and advantages of RealMedia, with the added benefit that it is free and anyone who owns a copy of Windows 98, 2000 or XP can download both the encoder and the player and start using the technology.  Files created with the Windows Media Encoder software must be placed on the Windows Media server to take advantage of the many benefits of streaming media.

Creating RealMedia Files

For content creation, you can use Helix Producer Plus or any video editing software that can save .rm files (many video software titles do).  Helix Producer allows users to transfer videos from VHS tapes into digital format that can be streamed by the RealMedia server.  Users can also create narrated PowerPoint presentations using PresenterOne.

RealProducer is installed on a machine especially configured to capture digital and analog audio and video on the CSTL lab.  PresenterOne is also available on the lab and may be borrowed upon request.
