Parks/Walking Trails

Capaha Park
Cape County Park, two of them, located on opposite sides of N. Kingshighway.
Conservation Center, accessible through Cape County North entrance. Wooded Trails.
Cape La Croix Trail, accessible at intersection on N. Kingshighway and Lexington (southeast corner) and Shawnee Sports Complex. See Dave Starrett’s map, distributed on Monday. Paved.
Trail of Tears State Park. Take 177 about 15 miles, follow signs. Nice bike ride.

Lakes and Rivers

Lake Boutin, Trail of Tears State Park.
- A great network of trails and a 20 acre lake. No gas motors.
Cedar Lake, Carbondale IL.
- Taking Boat Dock Rd. off 127 takes you to both the boat slip and hiking and mountain biking trails.
Kincaid Lake, Murphysboro, IL.
- There’s a lake for boating as well as a waterfall, believe it or not. On the way to the waterfall (Spillway Rd.) there’s also a mountain biking trailhead. http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/PARKS/R5/Kinkaid.htm

Parks and boating

Current River, Jacks Fork River, Eleven Point River

All three of these are protected scenic rivers in the Missouri Ozarks and offer canoeing, camping, swimming, and picnicking. You can rent canoes at various commercial locations on the rivers. The Student Recreation Center also has canoe rentals.

Hiking and Camping

Trail of Tears State Park - Close to Cape -- take MO 177 north. Some nice hiking trails, a lake with (sometimes) swimming.
Amidon Conservation Area - This is a pink granite shut-ins (see Johnson Shut-Ins, below) that offers some great swimming holes in the rocky-bottomed Castor River. It's kind of a hidden gem -- locals call it "Pink Rocks". Take US 61 through Jackson to MO 72 (about 11 mi), then continue NW on MO 72 about 30 mi to County Rd 249. Turn right, go 0.2 mi to County Rd. 251. Turn right, go 1.6 mi to County Rd 208. Turn right on 208 and go about 1 mile to a parking area. See map at the link above.
Sam A. Baker State Park - Lovely hilly terrain, traversed by the shallow, gravel-bottomed St. Francois river. Great for hiking and splashing around in the river. Camping and cabins available.
Big Oak Tree State Park - Raised catwalks through a remnant of the vast wetlands drained by the Little River project. Many state champion trees are located here.
Johnson Shut-Ins State Park - A "shut-ins", for those not from around here, is a rocky canyon with a stream or river passing through. This park was devastated by the failure of the Taum Sauk reservoir in 2005, but is now restored and open for swimming and hiking. Lots of fun swimming in the clear stream with rock slides and pools.
Hawn State Park - Camping, picnicking, hiking. Woods and streams.
Ozark Trail - Over 300 miles of trail through rugged terrain with opportunities to backpack and camp far from roads. Many streams with rocky pools for swimming.

Common Destinations in St. Louis

Olive –China Town. Ethnic restaurants, grocery stores, and bakeries.
Grand –Very diverse. Lots of Vietnamese and Thai. Lemongrass Cafe is a favorite vegetarian hotspot. Jay’s International Food Store is a great place to shop.
Delmar –University City “Loop”. Diverse, funky shops. Catch a concert at The Pageant and see Chuck Berry (and other acts) at Blueberry Hill (also a restaurant).
Soulard –Historic downtown neighborhood. Great Farmer’s Market.
The Hill --St. Louis' own Little Italy.
Malls: West County (Manchester Road) and Galleria (Brentwood Blvd) are closest to Cape and only one exit apart off 270W.
