Principle Three:  Good Practice Encourages Active Learning

Learning is not a spectator sport. Students do not learn much just sitting in classes listening to teachers, memorizing prepackaged assignments, and spitting out answers. They must talk about what they are learning, write reflectively about it, relate it to past experiences, and apply it to their daily lives. They must make what they learn part of themselves.

Develop various response formats

  • Interactive modules
  • Self-evaluation
  • Forms
     

Model active learning

  • Consultations with guest speakers
  • Create assignments that require students to react to real life scenarios, etc., or make real life application of information 
  • Students create visual models to represent concepts
  • Students create webquests
  • OIS DropBox
    • Interactive group projects
  • OIS Forum
    • Interactive discussion questions
    • Individual research and/or commentary
    • Interactive group projects
