- Choose an entry in Wikipedia, preferably on a topic you know
something about. Look for a spot where you could make a change,
whether it's expanding content, fixing a mechanical error, or making a
minor stylistic change. Be bold, as the Wikipedia motto says.
- Click on the tab that says "edit this page". You'll see the
Wikipedia markup language for the page. Don't be daunted; there's
an edit bar above that will insert appropriate code where you need it.
For more information and links to some help pages, see the
sample student Wikipedia assignment.
- Edit the entry to your satisfaction, and click on the button down at
the bottom that says "save this page."
- You've done it! Of course, if you didn't have a Wikipedia account,
your edit now appears on the history page identified only by your IP
address. It's better to create an account for yourself and sign in
when you edit pages. I insist that my students do this and tell me
their usernames, so that I can see what edits they've made and give
credit for them.
