Sample Wikipedia Assignment

1) Choose a topic relating to this course that is either not covered in Wikipedia or is not covered in sufficient depth in Wikipedia.  Get approval for your topic from me.

2) Write at least 100 words on the topic to be included in Wikipedia, either as a new article or as an addition to an existing article.

3) Be sure to cite at least one print source (or authoritative web source; if you choose this option, get permission from me first) in your article.  You must cite sources for all information in your article.  See Wikipedia Footnotes Help for the way to cite a reference.

4) Make links to other Wikipedia entries in yours wherever appropriate.  You do this by enclosing the word or term in double brackets, like this:

A [[Cruller]] is a kind of [[donut]] that may be topped with [[crystal sugar]].

In Wikipedia, that text would look like this:

A Cruller is a kind of donut that may be topped with crystal sugar.

You don't have to check to see if the article exists; if it does, the text will show up as blue when you put the entry in Wikipedia.  If not, it'll be red, and serve as a suggestion to someone else to make an article for that subject.

5) Be sure that the information you write is as correct as you're able to make it.

6) Register as a Wikipedia user, sign in, and put your entry in.  See the links below for help.   When you have the entry in the form you want, email me

  1. a link to the article

  2.  your user name

  3.  the text you put in

If you have questions, need help, etc. talk to me in class or in my office hours, or email me.
