Starting a Course Web Site with MS FrontPage and OIS Manager
Monday, January 8, 2007 from 08:15 AM to 12:00 PM
(Kent Library Little Theatre)

Facilitator: Dr. Mike Rodgers

Description: This workshop will explore course web site authoring using Microsoft FrontPage and OIS Manager. Use OIS Manager to create a basic course web site and then use FrontPage to customize the web site for your specific course needs. We will also adapt existing content, such as Word documents, to web-ready format.

Welcome

Goal Task Resources
A. Create an OIS class with a secure course Website 1. Download OIS software

Online Instructor Suite: OIS provides you with the software you need to manage a course Website.

OIS - Online Instructor SuiteOIS - Online Instructor Suite. An integrated collection of online course management tools: a gradebook, test facility, calendar, drop box, and discussion forum. Instructors control access to the tools through the Manager.

  2. Install OIS
  3. Create a class from Template Use OIS Manager to Create a Class http://cstl.semo.edu/cstl/resources/CourseWebDev/index.asp

Course Website using Manager's Template: follow the Wizard to put course information on the Web pages that OIS builds for you.

How can you view your new Website?

B. Understand how to manage a course with Manager 4. Explore class properties (right click or menu) Locations for #4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14For newcomers, the course information will be most important: which course and section(s), and whether the roster is synchronized.
  5. Look at synchronization Location for #5"Synchronized" means that the roster is updated by the mainframe. As students add or drop the course, their status in the OIS class changes accordingly.
  6. Add student(s)  (import and export students) You can import your own roster. Be careful, though: if the class is synchronized, the mainframe may duplicate students that you imported.
  7. Choose columns Synchronized rosters include numerous fields, not all of which may be of interest to you. You can clean up the display by choosing columns.
  8. Quick launch buttons A convenient way to work in the other OIS modules.
  9. Tools: E-mail from manager (Options) You can e-mail anyone in your roster directly from Manager. You can even compose e-mail that merges name and other information, so that each student gets an individualized e-mail.
  10. Print attendance record Basically the same as the export students option.
  11. Lock class By locking the class, you prevent anyone on the roster from logging in.
  12. Options (shared computer) If you share a computer, you can tell OIS to request your password each time you log in to Manager. A security feature.
  13. Survey only:
  1. Archive class
  2. Copy and move files
  3. Protect files and folders
  4. Check and fix
Locations for #13 a-dThese features will be more useful after you have used OIS for a while.
  14. Request class evaluations By selecting this option, you activate a system for sending an invitation to students to participate in an online IDEA evaluation of your course.
  15. Browser (tab; not much content in the Website) Browser tab locationThis tab allows you to access the OIS-enabled course Website directly from Manager.

C. Use Microsoft FrontPage to add content to the course Website. 16. Open FrontPage; get oriented How can we add course content (including the OIS links) to our Website?

OIS knows no content!  Microsoft FrontPage will help you add content to pages in your site: FrontPage (FP) is a Web-page authoring tool that is installed on computers available in faculty offices and campus computer labs. It's more than a word processor! FP helps you organize your entire class Website, so that students will be able to readily access your course materials from anywhere the Internet reaches. CSTL provides a "How To" site to help you with some FrontPage features.

The FrontPage Web

  • Starting FP: 1st time, every time
    • Find FP on your computer and start it.
  • FP views
    • Explore the various views, ending up with folder list and page view as your “standard” working view: "When a Web is open, this view lets you organize its files and folders."
  • What is a Web?
    • Log on to your personal CSTL Web.
    • Explore the basics of Web folder structure.
    • Look for an "index.htm" page.
  17. Add content to an existing page
  • Text (raw, and from Word document)
  • Images (clipart, file, properties)
  • Files

Think About it First

Add and format text  Text is still the workhorse of higher education. FP offers a wide array of formatting, some of which we will investigate here.

Images   If you believe that a picture is worth 1000 words, here is your chance to speak volumes! FP makes it easy to import images to your Web and to add those images to your Web pages.

  18. Add a new page (create, link) Hyperlinks

Use hyperlinks to allow your students to browse to other Web pages, send e-mail, or download other content files.
D. Include OIS functionality on a Web page 19. Explore template-generated links
  20. Add a link to an existing page

Use the addresses listed below to  place links on course pages within the "protected" folder of the Website.

GradeA: /ois-bin/gradeasrv/gradeasrv.dll
DropBox: /ois-bin/dropboxsrv/dropboxsrv.dll
Forum: /ois-bin/forumsrv/forumsrv.dll
UTest: /ois-bin/utestsrv/utestsrv.dll
Calendar: /ois-bin/calendarsrv/calendarsrv.dll
Chat: /ois-bin/chatsrv/chatsrv.dll
