The Online Class Rubric and You
Wednesday, May 28, 2008 from 08:30 AM to 11:00 AM (Kent Library Little Theater Lab)

Facilitator: Dr. Mike Rodgers

Description: In the Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 semesters, the Technology Associates worked on a course evaluation rubric. This rubric is similar to the Quality Matters rubric, however, this rubric has been adapted to the unique flavor that Southeast's classes offer. This workshop covers the basics of what the rubric is, and how it can be adapted to peer and departmental review. Be among the first to see this new and exciting system!

I. A Brief History

II. Quality Matters - A Model

III. Our Rubric

What is the Rubric?

  • A Best Practices document - not a top-down imposition

  • A companion to existing mechanisms to evaluate face-to-face instruction by probationary and other faculty

How our Rubric differs from the QM rubric:

  • QM is "Inter-Institutional Quality Assurance"

  • QM uses Review teams

  • Our Rubric evaluates faculty performance; QM does not

How might you use the Rubric? (remember: its use is completely voluntary!)

  • A guideline for developing/improving an online course

  • A tool for faculty and chairs to review online courses

  • Instructor self - study - for example, to help faculty prepare for a course review

  • Departments could decide to use it as a tool in P/T decisions
