Best Practices in Teaching with Technology
Website Organization
• Edit pages directly on the site, don’t use the Publish function

NAMINGS

• Don’t use spaces in directories or filenames
• Class Homepage page should be named index.htm or index.asp
• Use only use alphanumeric characters in naming pages
• Each page should have a short, descriptive name and a relative title
• All pages should be organized into descriptive folders

EXTRAS/FLUFFIES
• Don’t use animated clip art on the class web pages, or blinking text, or anything else that is really annoying
• Avoid using automatic pop up windows
• Pop up windows need a close button
• Use the same theme/template for the entire class
• Graphic buttons should have equivalent text buttons somewhere on the same page

WEBPAGE BASICS
• All pages should have a navigation bar that includes a link back to the Class Homepage

• Use relative URLs, not absolute ones
• When creating links that open new windows, warn the user first

• Run the FrontPage report to check for broken hyperlinks before the class starts
• Link to the system requirements page from the Class Homepage
• Any additional system (hardware/software) requirements must be included upfront in the class website and links should be provided for each

• All fair use and copyrighted material should be password protected; put into "Protected" folder
