This page contains the instructions for the UTest exercise for the workshop.  I have used NOTE: whenever something is not directly related to the steps necessary to complete the exercise.

The purpose of this exercise is to create a short introduction quiz that is designed to test your student's knowledge of information in the class syllabus.  This quiz gives students a review of important class policies and allows them to use the secure browser before their first "real" quiz or exam so that they can get it configured correctly before an actual class deadline.

NOTE: You should have already posted a link to your class website that links to UTest using "/ois-bin/utestsrv/utestsrv.dll" if you have not, you will need a link to UTest to complete this exercise.

1. Open UTest either from the desktop or from the launch icon in Manager.

NOTE:  If requested, enter your password which is your SE Key and the same password you use for your e-mail.

2. Go to the File menu and select New (you can also do this by typing Ctrl-N at the same time).

3. Click on the Add Question button and choose Add Multiple Choice Question.

NOTE:  There are other types of questions available in UTest, but in this activity, we will only use the multiple choice type.

4. A number 1 will appear in the left column.  Click on this number 1, to access the question entry screen.

NOTE:  For this exercise, we will ignore the settings at the top of the question entry screen.  They are for more advanced uses of UTest.

5. Enter the text of your question in the widest box immediately under the question number and that does not have a radio selection button next to it.

NOTE:  If you have an actual class syllabus on your website type in a question that relates to some detail of your class syllabus such as details on your late work policy or where you find class assignments on the website.  If you don't you can just use any question and answers for this exercise.

6. Enter as many answers as you want your question to have in the boxes with the radio buttons to the left.

NOTE:  UTest can have as few as one option for a multiple choice question and as many as five.  Any boxes that are left empty will be ignored when UTest creates the test for the students.

7. When you have finished entering your answers, click in the left column anywhere below the number 1.  This will return you to the screen on which the Add Question button appears.

8. Save your file by clicking on the save icon on the menu bar, selecting Save from the File menu, or typing Ctrl-S.

9. Now repeat steps 3 through 8 until you have added the questions you want in this introduction quiz.  When you have completed step 8 after the last question continue to step 10.

10. Click on the properties tab above question number 1 in the left column and to the right of the questions tab.

NOTE:  There are many more settings than we will use for this exercise that you can learn by yourself using downloadable CSTL manuals, by attending a CSTL workshop focused on UTest, or by setting up an appointment with a CSTL student worker.  This exercise uses very basic settings and retains UTest defaults for most settings.

11. When you select the properties tab, the summary screen is shown by default.  Look down the screen to the second set of tabs and select the availability tab.

NOTE: On the availability tab you can select several options such as when your test opens to students, when it closes to students, how long they have to take it, and how many times you allow them to take the test or quiz.

12. Select the options that you would like on this tab and then save the test following the instructions in step 8.  Remember that if your class is currently in session that any dates you select that include today will make the quiz visible to your students.

NOTE: For an introduction quiz, I recommend that you allow the students to take the quiz more than once so that they can test the Secure Browser on more than one computer.  I often select five times.

13. Now select the security and notification tab.  On this tab, select the first check box which begins "Students must use the secure browser..." and then save as instructed in step 8.

14. You can now exit UTest.

15. Load the UTest Secure Browser from the icon on your desktop.  Then type in the URL of your class or website into the secure browser.

16. Use the link you have set up to UTest on your website to enter your quiz.  Then click the link for your quiz and take the quiz and submit it.

Congratulations, you have successfully completed this exercise.
