Briefings on UN Events

Several organizations provide daily or weekly briefings. All of these include a free registration, after which you will receive the news briefs in your e-mail.

1. The UN Wire is a 5-day a week publication, sponsored by the UN Foundation. This is one of the best available sources of timely UN information, with approximately 25 brief articles each day on current UN issues, by category. Receive it in your e-mail, or online. >> sign up

The Opening Speeches in the General Assembly were broadcast via live web feed each day of the opening session, and these are typically available for download throughout the year. General Debate began 23 September and continues through 30 September.

2. The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Washington, DC publishes a weekly newsletter with information on the latest UN issues. The current week, along with back issues, can be accessed on this page.

The UN also has a variety of other webcasts and UNTV broadcasts happening each
week, including many of the open meetings of the GA, Security Council and various other UN bodies. Since most Model UN participants never get a chance to see what they are simulating live, webcasts can be an excellent alternative to give your students a "feel" for what happens at the UN.

3. The European Union has recently enhanced the UN information available on the web, including an e-mail alert service. You can sign up for free e-mail information.

Many, many of the documents that participants will want to utilize in their research are available or linked on the web page of the 64th General Assembly, in particular, we recommend that students review the resolutions and "Verbatim Records" of appropriate GA meetings to view the actual speeches given in the General Assembly. These are typically listed on the "Resolution" page for that year; for instance, find here the records for the 60th General Assembly.  Links are also available to previous years. Comparable Verbatim Records for the Security Council, along with other details of Council action, can be found at  http://www.un.org/Depts/dhl/resguide/scact2007.htm.
