The Southeast Missouri Model United Nations Team is comprised of Southeast students from a variety of disciplines who believe in the basic premise of the United Nations, ensuring peace and stability in the world, and who are dedicated to furthering their understanding of the role of the UN in the world today as well as the complexities of international relations. The group members pursue their goals by participating in three United Nations simulations a year. These simulations allow our members to reach out to our community, to serve regional high schools, and to raise the level of international awareness on Southeast’s campus.
The first simulation is a high school Model United Nations Conference that the group co-sponsors with the Department of Political Science, Philosophy & Religion. The event is held each November in the University Center. There are typically about 350 students who participate from 10-15 high schools throughout Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois and beyond. The high school event is getting bigger and better each year. Middle School students are also welcome to attend the conference.
In addition to running this conference, Southeast Students take part in simulations of their own. In the past Southeast students have taken part in simulations such as the Midwest Model United Nations, American Model United Nations, and the prestigious National Model United Nations .
Southeast Model United Nations members have also been honored to have received the following awards:
2006 - Experiential Learning Award from Southeast Missouri State University for Participation in National Model United Nations
2006 - Honorable Mention - Historical Security Council Representation of United Kingdom at Midwest Model United Nations
2006 - Outstanding Delegate Award - Sixth Committee Representation of Benin at American Model United Nations
