SoTL Fellows, Past, Present, and Future
One of the most significant features of the SoTL Fellows
Program is its
cross-disciplinary membership. To date, 22 different
disciplines spanning 7 colleges have been represented in the
Program. This is important for a number of reasons. First, it
demonstrates that there are no disciplinary boundaries confining
the scholarship of teaching and learning; it occurs within and
among disparately related fields of study. Physicists,
Psychologists, Instructional Librarians, and Dancers all rank
among past and present SoTL Fellows. Indeed, the number of
Fellowships awarded to faculty in Accounting, Communication,
Mathematics, and Nursing rival --and even eclipse-- those
awarded in Education. Second, and perhaps most promising, is the
fact that the Program is succeeding at influencing the
institutional ethos in a truly democratic fashion. While
it is true that the Provost and CSTL initiated the Program, it
has been the work of the Fellows themselves that has established
the value, credibility, and significance of scholarly teaching on campus. Nothing is imposed "from
above"; rather, the quality and quantity of SoTL work undertaken
by faculty is recognized, supported, and rewarded by the
administration. In addition to enhancing the teaching and learning
environment of their own classes, several Fellows have already
made contributions to the broader scholarly community.
Several SoTL Fellows have presented papers at regional-,
national-, and international conferences, and many have had
their work accepted for publication in leading, peer-reviewed
journals. This Fall, 10 new Fellows will begin work under
the tutelage of the Teaching Associates and SoTL Associates, and
we expect the trend in teaching innovation and scholarly
productivity to continue. To meet the SoTL Fellows and learn about their academic
