2008 Keynote Speaker

DR. Mike Beran,
Language Research Center, Atlanta, GA

Keynote Address:  Primate Willpower

How long would YOU wait for a Skittle?

Self-control is one aspect of behavioral self-regulation that is necessary for future-oriented
decision-making, and it is related to many aspects of human social and cognitive development.
Now, there is evidence that other animals also may show the kind of willpower that lets
them postpone getting a smaller reward for the sake of a future, bigger, or better reward.
Recent studies with chimpanzees show that they can delay gratification and they employ
behavioral strategies to cope with impulsivity. Chimpanzees may even use self-distraction
as a means of increasing willpower.
